30 things at 30

On the 5th of January of 2012, Fabricio Lima turned 30. After feeling weird and lost, as we all do on our 30th birthdays, he made a list of 30 things he knew about himself so far. Then he created a GIF animation for each one of them.

Joy and I turned 30 at 10:00 and 10:01 on January 9th, 2013, but all we did was high five, have some drinks and move on. I find Fabricio’s GIF animations to be a much more productive alternative.

Fabricio is a designer/director from São Paulo who also writes and contributes with Motionographer.

Yulie Cho

Yulie Cho is a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania. She is majoring in Integrated Product Design, but loves animation.  She’s taking a Computer Animation course and for one of her projects was assigned to interview professionals in the business. She contacted us.

I always giggle to myself when people call me a professional, which is silly because hell yes, we’re pros — but it’s just that I so vividly remember being in college with an assignment to interview a professional in the business.  Like it was yesterday.  But that was almost 7 years ago so get over it, Noelle.  You’re a grown up.

Anyway, Yulie is the best.  This week she sent us some doodles she did; she made a comic of an incident that happened one day, just for fun.  I love it because her style is great and I think it’s wonderful to take a funny moment from life and draw it out.  I have been wanting to do this more lately and Yulie has inspired me.  Also, I TOTALLY RELATE to this story.  If you went to Pratt, I bet you can too.  Enjoy, kids!

UGGGghhhhhhhh gross!!!!

No matter how clean we kept our dorm, there were at least 5 incidences where we were up on our desks screaming like cartoon elephants over a tiny mouse or cockroach scurrying across the floor.  Good thing Yulie is tons more brave than I am, and she knows how to handle herself in this situation.

Thanks for sharing your work Yulie!

“Nobody for President” by James Buran

James Buran described himself as an executive daydreamer. Until now! His first independent animated film, completed in just 2.5 weeks, launched today. Perfect for this dreary Monday morning before the election.

A guy who had his story, James dove into production. After a couple of weeks, he created art. Something that does what it’s meant to do – to make people feel. To think. But he was careful not to allow thinking to get in the way of thought. Wink. His unconfined hand-drawn technique and slaphappy tone adds excellent contrast to the film’s topic.

Nobody is the right choice, because Nobody bakes apple pie better than mom and Nobody can take a joke.

For more info and entertainment, the commercial motion design work built by James lives here.

{ still from “old man” by leah shore }

“for more than 20 years charles manson has refused to communicate with the outside world… until now. these are the actual never before heard phone conversations between canadian best selling author marlin marynick and charles manson.”

yes please! from there the film drops and you fall down the manson hole. it get’s outta hand, and purges energy that jumps off the screen and juggles with your brain. leah broke out the metal!

Comic blood splatters on PBS?

Maybe! This is an oddball opportunity to feature an unusual, dainty + ornamental piece of delicate workmanship.

Reel 13 is hosting another competition of 3 short films and this week, it includes “Down to the Bone” by Peter Ahern!

“PBS is giving us a chance to vote on airing a cartoon featuring an inside-out kid, comedic blood splatters and pseudo-sexual cat licking! Yay!” ~Peter

I have to say I’ve chosen very intriguing stills. Oh yah!

Do you want to see “Down to the Bone” on TV?!

It’s your call, darlings! Polls close this Wednesday, 4/4/12 @ 5pm. The film with the most votes will air on their tv channel this Saturday night!

And we won’t hurt you.

Hello Rubber House!  I’ve just discovered this animation studio, based in Melbourne. Led by Gregory Sharp + Ivan Dixon, Rubber House has directed and animated two music videos for Gotye’s album Making Mirrors. I was able to catch Don’t Worry, We’ll Be Watching You  during Gotye’s recent tour to NYC!

Coincidence! Ivan Dixon was just announced the winner of The LoopdeLoop LIQUID Screening. Congrats Ivan!

LoopdeLoop Liquid

Every once in a while, the little hermits of the animation world come out to play, for real. We are all virtually escaping our isolation tanks to connect + get loopy with a monthly animation challenge called LoopdeLoop. It’s magic.

Every month there’s a new theme to animate. There are a few simple rules. Like it can’t be dirty…in that perverted way. And it has to loop!

In collaboration with MTV’s Liquid Television, March’s theme is LIQUID. And since it’s so normal to take baths with monsters who are being frighteningly adorable in the tub, we created this little loop.

{inspired by Noey’s happy thoughts}

If you don’t like our loop, you’re wrong. So maybe if you feel like it show some love by clicking on the tiny stars? It’d be a lot cooler if you did.

Let’s all go to Australia! And attend their show at Loop on Tuesday March 27th, 7:30PM. All posted loops will screen + a winner will be announced, receiving a mystical prize. Oooh!

When stepping up to a challenge like this, there’s a lot of time spent getting sucked in by the many talented + creative submissions! The friendly competition is special. A few of my favorites include work by Nathanael Scott, Neil Sanders and last month’s winner, Felix Colgrave. Uhmazing.

Every project should have a goal as achievable + fun as this one. A contest like looping cycles is totally doable. Actually, it’s hypnotizing. After we finished animating all the bath time fun, we took a nap.

What will next month bring? I’m excited.

Our dear friends at the Charleston International Film Festival invited us to design the poster for them again this year!

When they asked us to create an animated festival trailer as well, we decided to bring the happy creatures in the poster to life for the big screen.  We hope you enjoy the spontaneous island dance party as much as these little guys.

Hamster Love

Look! An animated music video that’s legitimately scary and just adorable. “My Heart Belongs to You” by Lev Polyakov.

The hamster is crushing on a red headed school teacher (meow!) and rescues her from evil demons, obviously. And the music by Colin Huggins kicks surfer butt.

It’s up for Best Short on Reel 13. So if you enjoyed the light comedy + epic adventure of this video, it’d be so weird if you didn’t vote.  Voting ends for this week on Wednesday at 5PM. Holy sh*t it’s Tuesday. There’s still time!

I’m excited to discover this contest and might even submit my own if the mood strikes. Everyone should! Here’s some motivation — the winner receives $250 and is broadcast on Reel 13 Saturday night on THIRTEEN. On television.

I feel like a princess.

Buck gets weird for Good Books

Thanks, Hess, for sharing with us this incredible new animated video from Buck today.

Metamorphosis, directed and produced by Buck.

This homage to all things gonzo and Hunter S. Thompson promotes Good Books, the online bookseller that passes all its profits through to Oxfam.

String Theory wrote the drug-rant-esque script, Antfood is responsible for the fantastic sound design and a guy named Thor Erickson, NOT Johnny Depp, did the voice over.  He’s good; so convincing I almost thought this was an excerpt from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
