Twins Are Weird

A few weeks ago, my husband Pat found this hilarious novelty account on Reddit, UsernameFanfic, who writes fan fiction based on your Reddit username.  I begged UsernameFanfic to do one for our name, twinsareweird, with the promise that I’d create a little comic to accompany it. I LOVED the story and had so much fun coming up with the artwork for it. Here it is:

“Twins Are Weird.”

Joy, maybe we animate this for our next film?

UsernameFanfic has a blog under the alias Q. L. Strange called A Collection of Improbable Things.  You need to check it out.

I used the sketches for my Sketchbook Project 2012 submission and just shipped that little guy off to go on tour.  Every sketchbook is given a theme and my theme was called, “The Worst Story Ever Told.” This is NOT at all how I feel about this story, but it did make me giggle.  It kind of goes along with the subject matter.

Thanksgiving Story Time

This is a true story, and actually not very Thanksgiving-y. But as I gobble gobble this Turkey Day + give thanks, I’m reminded how thankful I am that my sister is a super hero.

We were seven. Swinging on our swing set in our backyard, just shooting the shit.

I was sucking on one of those peppermint candies at the time. Not the best idea on a swing.

As the candy lodged itself nicely in the back of my throat, I flopped over… backwards.

It was then that I realized I was probably choking.

So I began to make my way to my house. Noey looked like she was catching on.

It did not look good for little Joy. I knew my grandparents were home, but they were all the way up on the 2nd floor. Basically the journey back to my house was the worst.

Noey knew this was it. I was not going to make it up the stairs. She screamed something like, “Not today!” and threw my lifeless body over the railing.

Out popped the candy. “I’m alive!”

Just wanted to thank you for saving my life, Noey!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Kill Your Friends

Opening title sequence created by Kris Clarkin as his thesis project.  It’s for a proposed film adaptation of the book “Kill Your Friends,” based in London in 1997 when ‘Britpop’ is at its height.

I found Clarkin’s title sequence very entertaining, playfully integrating the names of the cast and crew into items found in the apartment with quick cuts to flashbacks from the main character’s life – sex, drugs and debauchery.

The book opens with a quote from Hunter S. Thompson, which summarizes the essence of the novel:

“The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs. There is also a negative side.

I think I need to read this book now.

The Fiction Project

I’m very excited and sad to see my sketchbook go on tour next week for the Sketchbook Project.  They grow up so fast.  Now I’m addicted to being creative everyday for fun instead of just for work.  I need my fix.

So even though I’m not a really a writer, I’ve signed myself up for the Fiction Project, another coast to coast tour by the Art House Co-op.  It’s just like the Sketchbook Project but with writing and you tell stories and draw pictures based on a theme.

Since my memory has rapidly gotten worse since young Noey began drinking in college, I’ve chosen the theme, “I’m Sorry I Forgot You.”

Hey photographers!  I may also join the AMLP Photomobile, where Art House sends you a disposable camera to take 27 frames on a single theme.  You then send it in to go on yet another tour.

Want to do it?  I’m nervous because I haven’t used a disposable camera since 2003.  Oh the pressure of not being able to delete a bad photo.
